Gond art can best be described as ‘on line work’. Lines are used in such a way that they convey a sense of movement to the still images. Dots and dashes are added to impart a greater sense of movement and increase the amount of detail in the artwork. Gond tribal art is practiced by one of India's largest tribes, with whom it also shares its name. The word Gond comes from Kond, which means green mountains in the Dravidian idiom. This art was originally done on walls coated with mud and cow dung as a symbol of good fortune. Starting in the early 1980s, artisans from Madhya Pradesh transformed their ritual performing art into a narrative visual art.
