The dolphin, with its playful nature and obvious intelligence, played an important part in the culture of the Maori people. They are seen as the bearers of good luck and protectors of those at sea. Like the whale, they also represent all that is good in a family, as the young are protected, nurtured, and guided by the entire group, not just immediate parents, much like the traditional extended family in Maori culture.
