Being the birthplace of some of the many celebrated folk tales of India, it comes out quite naturally that the natives of Mithila have an inherent quality to narrate visually captivating stories. These visual narratives are known as Madhubani Paintings, literally meaning the ‘Forest of honey’. Madhubani is a district in the state of Bihar, India, and this tribal art form can be traced back to 2,500 years ago. These paintings depict an assembly of symbolic images of the lotus plant, the bamboo grove, fishes, birds, and snakes in union. There are 5 different types of Madhubani paintings: Kohbar, Bharani, Godana, Tantrik, and Kachani. Broomsticks are used as brushes, and natural colors from leaves, flowers, charcoal, etc., are used as paint.
