The dolphin, with its playful nature and obvious intelligence, played an important part in the culture of the Māori people. They are seen as the bearers of good luck and protectors of those at sea. They also, like the whale, have come to represent all that is good in a family, as the young are protected, nurtured, and guided by all of the group,p not just immediate parents, much like the traditional extended family in Māori culture.
